Roots of Wisdom-
Born in Honnalli village, Karnataka, Tulsi Gowda belonged to the Halakki Vokkaliga tribe. With almost no formal education, she developed a deep bond with nature from a very young age. Learning from her mother, she spent her childhood observing forests, planting saplings, and understanding the intricate balance of ecosystems. Her hands-on experience became her greatest teacher.
The Forest Guardian
Throughout her lifetime, Tulsi Gowda planted and cared for more than 100,000 trees in the Western Ghats, a key area for biodiversity in India. People called her the “Encyclopedia of the Forest” because she knew so much about the trees. She could recognize the mother trees, gather seeds, and help different plants grow. Her deep knowledge helped save many trees and kept the forest ecosystems in balance.

Even after retiring from the Karnataka Forestry Department at the age of 70, Tulsi continued educating communities and younger generations about sustainable forestry practices. Her guidance empowered many to respect and protect nature, highlighting the importance of every tree in the ecosystem.
